KKN Gurugram Desk | India and Bhutan are all set to strengthen their bilateral ties through a groundbreaking project connecting the two nations. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a railway track spanning from Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan has been completed, marking a significant milestone for this ambitious venture. According to a spokesperson from the North East Frontier Railway (NFR), the final location survey for the railway line has been completed, and now the DPR is awaiting approval. Once granted, the project promises to bring about major infrastructural changes, economic growth, and cultural exchanges between India and Bhutan.

Length and Scope of the Railway Project

The proposed railway line will stretch over 69.04 kilometers, linking the Kokrajhar station in Assam with Gelephu in Bhutan. The total estimated cost of the project is around ₹3,500 crore, underscoring its scale and significance. The project will not only improve connectivity between the two nations but also enhance regional infrastructure within India. As part of the initiative, six new railway stations will be developed along the route: Balajan, Garubhasha, Runikhata, Shantipur, Dadgiri, and Gelephu.

Enhancing Railway Infrastructure

The project aims to modernize the existing railway infrastructure and make it more robust to handle increased traffic. Major components of the plan include the construction of two significant bridges, 29 large bridges, 65 smaller bridges, one road over-, 39 road under-bridges, and two viaducts, each 11 meters long. This extensive development will ensure the smooth and safe movement of trains, even through challenging terrains, and provide better access to remote areas.

Strengthening India-Bhutan Relations

One of the primary goals of the proposed India-Bhutan railway service is to foster stronger trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between the two countries. With Bhutan finally gaining railway connectivity, the people of Bhutan will have access to improved transportation facilities, benefiting various sectors of the economy. This improved access is expected to accelerate the region’s overall economic and social development, enhancing Bhutan’s participation in the regional economy.

Moreover, the railway service is likely to boost tourism, which will be a significant contributor to Bhutan’s GDP. The easier movement of people between the two nations will encourage more tourists to explore the scenic landscapes, rich culture, and unique experiences that both countries offer.

Boost to the Bodoland Region

One of the most significant advantages of the India-Bhutan train service will be the transformation of the Bodoland region in Assam into a commercial and trade hub. The region, currently underdeveloped in terms of infrastructure, will see a surge in and economic activities. Local businesses, along with the transportation and hospitality sectors, are likely to benefit the most from this new connectivity. The area’s strategic location, coupled with improved transport links, will make it a key player in regional trade.

The project is expected to attract investment in sectors such as tourism, retail, and logistics. The availability of a direct rail link between India and Bhutan will reduce the time and cost of transportation, making the Bodoland region an attractive choice for investors looking to establish businesses or set operations in the area.

Aligning with India’s “Act East” and “Neighborhood First” Policies

The railway project between India and Bhutan is also a clear reflection of India’s “Act East Policy” and “Neighborhood First” strategy. Both policies aim to enhance connectivity and strengthen ties with neighboring countries in South Asia, with a particular emphasis on improving relations with Southeast Asian nations and fostering regional economic integration.

By establishing a direct rail link between India and Bhutan, this project will facilitate smoother trade, faster movement of goods, and enhance overall cooperation between the two nations. Furthermore, it will contribute to Bhutan’s economic growth while providing India with better access to markets in Bhutan and beyond.

In the larger context of regional integration, the railway service will provide Bhutan with better access to India’s markets, while also ensuring that India can tap into Bhutan’s natural resources, including hydropower. This collaboration will not only benefit the two nations but also promote greater stability and prosperity in the South Asian region.

Economic Implications and Long-term Benefits

Once completed, the India-Bhutan railway service is expected to have a transformative impact on both countries’ economies. Bhutan’s access to India’s vast rail network will help it integrate more effectively into regional and international trade routes. Additionally, goods and commodities can be transported more efficiently, reducing dependency on road transport and thus lowering logistical costs.

For India, the railway service will open up new avenues for trade and investment with Bhutan, which has traditionally been a close ally. As Bhutan’s economy grows, Indian businesses can leverage the proximity to expand into Bhutanese markets, particularly in sectors like renewable energy, construction, and manufacturing.

In the long run, the railway line will contribute to regional economic stability by fostering greater cooperation between India and Bhutan, which could lead to new joint ventures, collaborations, and partnerships across various sectors.

Impact on People-to-People Connectivity

Beyond trade and business, the railway service will also improve people-to-people connectivity between India and Bhutan. The easier movement of people across the border will allow for better cultural exchanges, strengthening the bond between the two countries. Both nations share deep cultural and historical ties, and this railway service will offer citizens from both sides a convenient and affordable means of travel.

Bhutanese people will also benefit from enhanced access to Indian cities, allowing them to experience the vast educational, , and employment opportunities that India offers. Likewise, Indian tourists and professionals will find it easier to explore Bhutan’s unique cultural offerings and contribute to its economy.

Environmental Considerations and Sustainability

While the railway project will have a significant economic impact, it is also essential to address potential environmental concerns. The construction of such a large infrastructure project in hilly terrains requires careful planning and implementation to minimize ecological damage. Proper environmental impact assessments and mitigation strategies will be necessary to ensure the railway line does not harm local ecosystems, wildlife, or natural resources.

In line with sustainability goals, it will be important for the project to incorporate energy-efficient technologies, such as electric trains, to reduce the carbon footprint of the service. Additionally, a focus on reducing land degradation and preserving biodiversity along the railway route will be crucial for maintaining the ecological balance of the region.

Timeline and Future Prospects

According to the spokesperson from the North East Frontier Railway (NFR), the final location survey has been completed, and the DPR is now awaiting approval. Once the necessary approvals are granted, construction work will commence, with the project expected to be completed in phases over the next few years.

This ambitious railway project is set to become a significant milestone in India-Bhutan relations. Not only will it provide essential infrastructure, but it will also open up new opportunities for business, tourism, and cultural exchange. It is expected to play a pivotal role in furthering regional connectivity, strengthening bilateral ties, and fostering peace and stability in the region.

The proposed India-Bhutan train service promises to be a game-changer for both nations, opening up new frontiers for trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. By improving infrastructure, fostering economic growth, and enhancing regional cooperation, this railway project will contribute to the overall prosperity of the region. As the DPR awaits approval, both India and Bhutan look forward to the day when this historic project becomes a reality, ushering in a new era of connectivity and collaboration in South Asia.
